Diaspora Features and Reviews

Diaspora is a user-owned, non-profit, distributed social network.

Overview.

Diaspora is a decentralized social network, consisting of many individual servers called ‘pods’. The platform allows users to download all their images and text that have been uploaded at any time. To get started on Diaspora, users must find a pod that suits them. Smaller pods allow cross-posting to external services (such as Twitter), Users can find a pod situated near them, or one based in a country that  has good data security policies.

Diaspora enables users to host pods and have some system administrator skills. Then they can create a profile with as much information as they choose to provide. Plus, users can join conversations by following the hashtags that interest them. The word Diaspora has a Greek origin that refers to a scattered or dispersed population.

The three key ideologies that Diaspora operates on are decentralization, freedom, and privacy. As a decentralized platform,  it exists on independent run servers("pods") all over the world and nobody’s data is held on huge central servers owned by large organizations. Diaspora gives their users freedom to be who they want to be. They do not even have to upload their real identity. As for privacy,  messages are not checked  by anyone except the user allows it. Users have full control of their content.

Diaspora was created to give users that confidentiality, ensuring that users’ messages and chats are not seen by any prying eyes.  Diaspora is launched with the aim of creating a decentralized social networking alternative to Facebook, although it has now become a community project.

Most social networks are controlled by centralized servers and run by a corporation. This makes it easy to hack and  the information can get lost.  Also, if there were a problem with the central servers it would cause the network to perform slowly. This is not the case with Diaspora, as no single entity can claim ownership to it.

Diaspora supports embedding of media from YouTube. This allows other people to re-publish a user's work on their website, channel or blog. Thus, helping the user to gain exposure.

Diaspora acts as a social aggregator as is allows users to import posts easily from Facebook, pre-2018 Tumblr and Twitter. These features lower the barriers that users face when joining the network as more friends from those platforms join, users don’t need to go back to Facebook to continue the communication. Now, messages can be direct and secure without passing through Facebook servers at all.

Diaspora is a free network that gives liberty. It gives users the freedom to be whoever they choose to be while ensuring confidentiality of their messages. Also, independently owned nodes enable users to set up and run their own social network and connect their network to  the larger Diaspora ecosystem.

Diaspora content is licensed under the terms of GNU-AGPL-3.0. Its development is managed by the Diaspora foundation, which is part of the Free Software Support Network (FSSSN).
