Hive, Pig, Cascading and Codd: A Crash Course in Map/Reduce Relational Languages via an Appeal to History

This is a crash course in Big Data architecture and relational languages including Hive, Pig and Cascading. A fair amount of technical and theoretical knowledge is needed for this presentation, which delves into the history of relational models which began with Codd’s seminal 1969 paper “A Relational Model of Data..”.  Codd’s theory is tested and adjusted to fit contemporary programming languages like Pig and Cascading.
